Brief history:
The Benelux competition is now going into it's 6th season and is increasingly becoming an important part of men's handbal in the Benelux. The neccessity of the further development of this league is due to common "scale" problems in each country. Especially, when it comes to sponsoring, talent, marketing and a variety of other handbalsport related issues.
The motto, "Together is better", is the basic vision behind this league.
This is also why the Benelux competition recieved the "EU citizens innovation prize" from EU Sportsdepartment in Brussels in 2009.
Ulimate goal:
The ulimate goal of the Benelux competition is to achieve a full competition between the three countries. The three federations have an agreement to try to achieve a full competition in the season of 2014 - 2015.
The competition:
The Benelux competition is played in 2 groups of 6 teams. The top four teams of each country are permitted to play in het competition. The top four teams can achieve there position by ending up first till fourth in their own national competition of the previous season. All matches are played against eachother in a so-called "dubble competition".
Meaning that each team plays an away match and a home match against all the teams in their group. The finals are held at a central location. In this finals weekend the semifinals are played on the Saturday and the finals on the Sunday.
The first round of the season 2012-2013 will be held in the weekend of 22/23 of September. In this weekend the Belgium vs. Holland and Holland vs. Belgium matches will be held. The entire match schedule will follow shortly.
